Fort Lauderdale is named after a series of forts built by the United States during the Second Seminole War. The forts took their name from Major William Lauderdale (1782-1838), younger brother of Lieutenant Colonel James Lauderdale. William Lauderdale was the commander of the detachment of soldiers who built the first fort. However, development of the city did not begin until 50 years after the forts were abandoned at the end of the conflict. Three forts named "Fort Lauderdale" were constructed; the first was at the fork of the New River, the second at Tarpon Bend on the New River between the Colee Hammock and Rio Vista neighborhoods, and the third near the site of the Bahia Mar Marina, the main venue for "The Greatest Boat Show On The Seven Seas" the world famous Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida is known as the "Yachting Capital of the World" and will host the 61st annual  Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show on October 28th through November 1st, 2020. Show exhibits range from yacht builders and designers to exotic cars and brokerage yachts. A wide variety of boats and sea vessels will be on display including runabouts, sportfishers, high performance boats, center consoles, cabin cruisers, flats boats, skiffs, express cruisers, sailing yachts, motor yachts, bowriders, catamarans, ski boats, jet boats, trawlers, inflatables, canoes, and extraordinary superyachts. Covering seven locations and over 3 million square feet of space, the show's transportation network of bus shuttles, water taxis, and riverboats ensures attendees can easily navigate the boat show and its expansive waterways system.

While you're here stop at the Stranahan House, a preserved 1900s home furnished with antiques of the era. Or "follow the red brick road" of the Fort Lauderdale Riverwalk, the landscaped park, to the Arts and Entertainment District. Like to gamble? The horses are running at Gulfstream Park, they're playing Jai Alai in Dania Beach, and the Guitar Hotel at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino is a must see. Trying to stay fit? Dive into the Atlantic Ocean, hike into the alligator and python infested Everglades, or enjoy a workout and healthy fare at a resort spa. Whether you're visiting Fort Lauderdale for the boat show, a business meeting, or just for leisure, here's  A List of Fort Lauderdale Food and Drink Spots to Fit Your Every Mood
